Nfld. Premier apologizes for Chinese head tax
St. John's — Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams has apologized for the head tax the former Dominion of Newfoundland imposed on more than 300 Chinese men.
In a statement, he said the $300 tax, in place from 1906 until 1949, created economic and emotional hardship for Chinese immigrants.
The statement noted the province is not accepting legal or financial responsibility and did not mention compensation. CP
