Overseas students and backpackers are being encouraged to take Australian jobs in a Federal Government effort to overcome the nation's shortage of skilled workers.
The Australia Needs Skills Expo, held in Brisbane on Saturday, aims to entice skilled temporary residents into high demand areas including the health and construction sectors, and the mining, oil and gas industries, Minister for Immigration and Citizenship Kevin Andrews said.
Employers unable to fill skilled positions are able to sponsor overseas workers through various programs, Mr Andrews said.
