Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a Senate bill that would have given undocumented immigrant college students access to state financial aid.

In a letter to lawmakers, Schwarzenegger said he was vetoeing the “California Dream Act” because of financial challenges faced by the state's higher education system. “It would not be prudent to place additional strain on the General Fund to accord the new benefit of providing state subsidized financial aid to students without lawful immigration status, said the letter, which was sent over the weekend.

The bill, which was proposed by state Sen. Gilbert Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, would have given undocumented students access to some fee waivers and financial aid.
