OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Dec. 12, 2008) – Rena Dhir has been appointed to a three-year term in the Vancouver office of the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, announced today.
The announcement follows the Minister's commitment on November 28, 2008 to the Canadian Council for Refugees to fill vacancies on the board with qualified individuals as quickly as possible as part of the solution to reducing long wait times before the IRB, which adjudicates refugee claims.
The appointment of Ms. Dhir was made in accordance with the IRB's merit-based appointment process.
Ms. Dhir is a leading figure in the Indo-Canadian community in Vancouver. Prior to her appointment to the IRB, Ms. Dhir was Controller for Software Productivity Center(VR1). She also held the position of Controller for Kaldor Design Group Ltd. and was Senior Accountant for MC Forest Products Inc. She received a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of British Columbia and is a Certified General Accountant.
Created in 1989, the IRB is an independent administrative tribunal that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism. The IRB has three divisions: the Refugee Protection Division, the Immigration Appeal Division and the Immigration Division. The IRB determines refugee protection claims made in Canada, hears immigration appeals, and conducts admissibility hearings and detention reviews.
