MID Sussex MP Nicholas Soames says it is 'the politics of madness' to continue with immigration policies that will increase the demand for housing.
Mr Soames, whose Mid Sussex constituency must take another 17,000 new homes by 2026, was reacting to new official figures released in Regional Trends, which show that the projected number of households in England will rise by almost four million in 15 years – from 21.52 million (2006) to 25.44 million in 2021.
Of these, over one million will be in London and the South-East.
By 2031, there are forecast to be 27.82 million households in England a further increase of nearly 2.5 million.
According to the Government's forecasts, 70 per cent of the population increase up to 2031 will be due to immigration, which will account for almost 40 per cent of all new households in England.
Mr Soames is co-chairman with Frank Field MP of the Cross Party Group on Balanced Migration.
In a joint statement, the two MPs said: “As we face severe cuts in public spending, it is the politics of madness to continue with immigration policies that will mean us having to provide thousands of new homes for newcomers not to mention the necessary roads, schools and hospitals on this unprecedented scale, when our own citizens, both black and white, cannot get homes.”
