In a pilot program, the Grand Forks sector of the Border Patrol is stationing agents in smaller towns with the hopes of boosting its presence in the region near the U.S.-Canada border.

Agency spokesman Bryce Koether said Tuesday that the Resident Agent Program is meant to increase the Border Patrols involvement with local law enforcement officials and communities.

Koether said handfuls of agents will be stationed in 12 different towns, ranging from Williston, N.D., to Karlstad, Minn., to Ashland, Wis. Agents in the program will carry out normal duties but without a traditional base of operation.

Grand Forks is the headquarters of a Border Patrol sector that includes North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri.
