A boat believed to be carrying 53 suspected asylum seekers has been intercepted near Christmas Island.

The patrol boat HMAS Broome, operating under the control of Border Protection Command, intercepted the suspected illegal entry vessel about 8.30pm (AEDT) Wednesday night.

It is the 53rd boat to be intercepted this year.

The boat was intercepted 20 nautical miles north-west of Christmas Island.

Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said the group would be transferred to Christmas Island where they will undergo security, identity and health checks.

Their reasons for travel will also be established.

Since September 2008, the AFP has charged 68 people with offences under Australia's Migration Act. These offences attract a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment.
