MONTREAL—RCMP and border police were at the port of Montreal Thursday morning, where nine migrants were found in a shipping container.
The migrants were discovered around 1 a.m., hidden inside a false-bottom in the container at a terminal in the citys east end.
They are believed to be from the north African country of Morocco. Their condition is not clear.
Robert Gervais, a spokesman for Immigration Canada, told QMI Agency that his office has not yet received a request for a refugee hearing.
“(Canada Border Services) can detain someone for 48 hours, he said. “We'll probably know by the end of the day if CBSA wants to keep these people detained.
Gervais says the earliest that a hearing could be held is Friday afternoon, or possibly Monday morning.
Its not clear what ship the Moroccans arrived on. An investigation is underway.
