Demands for investigation into tanker full of illegal immigrants

In the wake of the discovery of illegal immigrants in a German-owned tanker, Tories have demanded a full investigation and a Parliamentary debate.
Eight immigrants were discovered travelling in a tanker when it stopped in Harrow Manorway, Abbey Wood, just yards from its destination at the Crossness sewage treatment works.
The German driver was arrested on suspicion of people trafficking and, after hospital treatment, the immigrants are now being dealt with by the Border and Immigration Service.
But the Erith and Thamesmead Conservative Association has written to the Prime Minister, the Home Secretary and the Leader of the House of Commons demanding action.
Belvedere councillor David Leaf said: “The fact eight illegal immigrants were seemingly able to enter the country in this way is deeply worrying.”
He added: “There are wider ramifications which must be examined.
“The illegal immigrants should have been picked up by officials at the point of entry into this country.
“Their lives have been put at risk and the Government's immigration controls have been dented.”
