Chinese officials recruited to tackle passport fraud

The Federal Government has that Chinese officials will be recruited in a crackdown on identify fraud and fake passports.

The Government will sponsor two Chinese officials to study forensic document examination in Canberra and be trained by the Australian Immigration Department.

Immigration Minister Chris Evans says 128 people were found to have arrived at Australian airports with fake passports last financial year, and most were from Iraq, China and Sri Lanka.

Senator Evans says 143 people who had been trying to fly to Australia were picked up at overseas airports with fake passports, mostly in Bangkok, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.
