Phoenix — A far-reaching and somewhat controversial immigration bill is expected to be debated in the state Legislature today. If passed, it would be one of the toughest illegal immigration laws in the country.

One provision of the law would make it illegal to transport undocumented immigrants, even if that transportation is not related to human smuggling. Two lawmakers are questioning whether that provision would violate freedom of association rights.

Those lawmakers believe that simply giving a friend who might be in this country illegally a ride to church, for example, should not be illegal.

Supporters of the bill say that criticism is incorrect.

The bill is expected to undergo some changes in the coming days due to those kinds of concerns.
